On Monday, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, citing numerous financial and statutory violations.
Following his impeachment, Mudashiru Obasa’s deputy, Lasbat Meranda, assumed the position of speaker. Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, previously served as chief whip in the House.
The impeachment was prompted by reports of Obasa’s involvement in the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers and other controversial activities.
Mudashiru Obasa, who took office as speaker on June 8, 2015, alongside former governor Akinwunmi Ambode, is 52 years old.
