Following his inauguration, U.S. President Donald Trump issued pardons to individuals involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol building attack.
The pardon order was signed in the White House in Washington just hours after he took office on Monday. The exact number of people pardoned and the crimes they were convicted of were initially unclear.
Trump’s close confidants, including Vice President JD Vance, had previously stated that those who had engaged in violence would not be pardoned. Trump himself had not provided any details prior to his inauguration.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a total of 1,488 individuals have been charged for offenses related to the Capitol breach.
On January 6, 2021, supporters of Trump forcibly entered the U.S. Congressional seat in Washington during the certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.
