As devastating wildfires continue to wreak havoc across California, filmmaker and philanthropist Tyler Perry has condemned insurance companies for reportedly dropping “millions of policies” during the crisis.
On Sunday, January 12, Perry shared a heartfelt message on Instagram after witnessing a woman using a garden hose to protect her elderly parents’ home due to their cancelled insurance coverage. The incident left Perry questioning the ethics of these corporations.
Tyler Perry’s Statement
In his post, Perry criticized insurance companies for profiting off policyholders for years only to abandon them during their time of greatest need:
“Does anyone else find it appalling that insurance companies can take billions of dollars out of communities for years and then, all of a sudden, be allowed to cancel millions of policies for the very people they became rich on? People who have paid premiums all of their lives are left with nothing because of pure greed.”
Perry also expressed his prayers for those affected by the fires and announced that he is working on ways to offer support.
Social Media Reacts
Perry’s comments sparked a wave of reactions online, with many expressing outrage at the behaviour of insurance companies. Social media users in the comment section praised Perry for using his platform to address the issue:
- @eyes_onthesky1: “It should be illegal to cancel insurance policies during a disaster.”
- @theyycallmetee: “What am I paying you for if you can deny or cancel coverage when I need it?”
- @countrygaldee: “Makes you wonder if they KNEW something was coming …”
- @scrapvip2: “Tyler is definitely a real one. He’s not scared to speak up and always does something honorable.”
Others criticized the entire insurance industry, calling it fraudulent and exploitative.
Insurance Companies Under Fire
According to the Los Angeles Times, several insurance companies have taken drastic measures in response to the wildfire crisis:
- State Farm General Insurance announced plans in March 2024 to drop 30,000 home and condo policies upon expiration, including 1,600 policies in the fire-ravaged Pacific Palisades area.
- Allstate paused issuing new policies, while Tokio Marine America Insurance Co. and Trans Pacific Insurance Co. pulled out of California altogether.
- Mercury Insurance, however, has stepped in to welcome customers left stranded by these companies.
