United States President Donald Trump acknowledged on Sunday that the tariffs he has implemented on Mexico, Canada, and China could lead to short term challenges for Americans, as global markets showed concerns about the potential impact on growth and inflation.
Trump mentioned that he would be speaking with the leaders of Canada and Mexico on Monday, but he suggested that their retaliatory tariffs would not change his stance.
“I don’t expect anything dramatic. They owe us a lot of money, and I’m sure they’re going to pay,” he said.
He also hinted at future tariffs with the European Union, without specifying a timeline.
Despite criticism from opponents who believe the tariffs could harm global growth and raise prices for Americans, Trump defended his decision by emphasizing the importance of addressing immigration, narcotics trafficking, and supporting domestic industries.
“We may have short term some little pain, and people understand that. But long term, the United States has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world,” he said.
