The Department of Home Affairs in South Africa has detained Anabela Rungo, the mother of renowned model and Miss Universe Nigeria 2023, Chidimma Adetshina, in Cape Town.
Rungo’s arrest follows the revocation of her South African documentation in September 2024, which authorities say was fraudulently obtained. Despite being declared “undesirable”, she allegedly continued residing in the country using her Mozambican passport.
Investigators from the Counter-Corruption and Immigration Services also discovered that Adetshina’s underage child was living with Rungo.
Rungo is now set to be handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS), as she is under investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
Meanwhile, the Department of Home Affairs is working with the Department of Social Development and SAPS Child Protection Unit to ensure the child’s welfare.
This development comes after Chidimma Adetshina, who had initially entered the Miss South Africa pageant, later withdrew. The case has drawn significant attention to Rungo’s alleged identity fraud and fraudulent citizenship acquisition.
