Katy Perry and Gayle King are set to embark on a space expedition as part of an exclusively female mission.
On Thursday, it was publicly disclosed that the Katy Perry and the esteemed broadcast journalist will participate in an all-female contingent scheduled to journey into space aboard a Blue Origin space tourism rocket, a venture spearheaded by technology magnate Jeff Bezos.
In a statement, Blue Origin said, “(Sánchez) is honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come.”
The crew will additionally comprise Bezos’ fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, who is both a journalist and a licensed pilot, alongside film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and research scientist Amanda Nguyen.
The mission, which was unveiled on CBS Mornings, is poised to be the inaugural all-female flight crew since the historic spaceflight of Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova in 1963.
The flight will facilitate Katy Perry and the five other crew members in traversing the Kármán line, positioned at 62 miles (100 kilometers) above the Earth’s surface, which delineates the boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.
The rocket, operating without a pilot, will propel the capsule containing the women into space for a duration of several minutes characterized by weightlessness, before descending with parachutes approximately 15 minutes later.
The mission is slated for execution this spring from Blue Origin’s Launch Site One, located in the arid West Texas desert near Van Horn.
This forthcoming flight will also render King the second host of a network morning show to venture into space aboard a Blue Origin rocket, following Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan, who participated as a crew member in December 2021.
