Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has publicly expressed support for Lagos-based NYSC member Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, after she claimed to have received threats for criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration in a viral video.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Atiku commended Raye’s courage and described her as a symbol of politically engaged youth advocating for democratic values.
“Raye embodies the spirit of a new generation of women who champion the ideals of popular participation and unwavering advocacy in the political sphere.
I deeply admire her boldness and wisdom—her fearless resolve to speak truth to power, undeterred by the weight of opposition,” Atiku wrote.
The former presidential candidate likened Raye to legendary female activists like Gambo Sawaba, Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti, and Margaret Ekpo, who played crucial roles in Nigeria’s political history.
He further called for encouragement and support for Raye rather than threats, emphasizing that she represents the next generation of Nigerian leaders shaping the country’s future.
Raye made headlines after a video she posted on TikTok (#talktoraye) went viral. In the clip, she lamented the harsh economic realities in Nigeria, criticizing President Tinubu’s leadership and arguing that hard work no longer guarantees financial stability.
Following the video’s circulation, she alleged that she received threats from NYSC officials, pressuring her to take it down. Authorities have yet to respond to Raye’s claims officially.
