Blackout as national grid suffers ‘system outage’

The national Grid has collapsed for the first time in 2025

The national grid experienced a system disturbance on Friday, causing power outages in some parts of the country, particularly Lagos.

This occurred despite the Federal Government celebrating a historic increase in power generation to 6,000MW.

Power generation unexpectedly dropped below 1,000MW at 2 pm, down from 4,000MW earlier in the day. The peak generation for Friday was 5284MW at 5 am, but by 4 pm it had decreased to 803MW as many generation plants were unable to supply the national grid.
