Real Madrid missed a golden opportunity to reclaim the top spot in La Liga after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Real Betis at the Benito Villamarín.
Brahim Diaz put Los Blancos ahead in the 10th minute, finishing off a well-crafted move involving Kylian Mbappe and Ferland Mendy. However, Johnny Cardoso leveled the score before halftime, heading home from Isco’s pinpoint corner to net his first goal of the season.
Betis dominated with 18 shots to Madrid’s 8 and earned a decisive penalty early in the second half. Jesus Rodriguez won the spot-kick after being fouled by Antonio Rudiger, and Isco made no mistake from 12 yards, despite Thibaut Courtois getting a hand to the ball.
Cucho Hernandez nearly put the game beyond doubt but squandered a late chance, firing wide after being set up by Antony.
Nevertheless, Manuel Pellegrini’s side held on for a long-awaited victory over his former club, marking his first win against Real Madrid as Betis manager on his 10th attempt.
The defeat leaves Real Madrid in second place, giving Atletico Madrid and Barcelona a chance to widen the gap in the title race.
