Cody Gakpo may face disciplinary action from the Football Association after revealing a religious message during Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. This win secured the Premier League title for Liverpool.
The Dutch forward scored the third goal for Liverpool and celebrated by showing an undershirt with the words “I belong to Jesus”, reminiscent of Kaka’s famous gesture in the 2007 Champions League final. Gakpo received a yellow card for this display.
The FA is currently reviewing the incident and could potentially issue a formal warning. While expressions of faith in football have been seen before, the rules are strict.
According to Law 4 of the International Football Association Board’s (IFAB) Laws of the Game: “Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images… For any offence the player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organiser, national football association or by FIFA.”
Liverpool’s triumphant win marked a dominant end to the season, with the Premier League title secured early. Gakpo is expected to play in their upcoming game against Chelsea on May 4, barring any further consequences.
