Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has boldly stated that he possesses the capacity to lead Nigeria as president, but emphasized that any such ambition would only be pursued if it aligns with the will of Nigerians and the direction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Makinde said,
“I don’t have any doubt that I have the capacity to occupy the highest office in this land and I have what it takes.”
However, he noted that ambition must be tempered with reality:
“But is that what Nigerians are asking for right now? Is it what my party will support? We don’t know. There’s still a long time to go.”
Makinde stressed that internal reconciliation within the PDP is a top priority before any talk of mergers or coalitions. He commented on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s coalition moves with politicians like Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai, saying,
“Individuals can associate, but the PDP must not jump into any coalition without resolving its own internal issues. Your house must be in order before you invite others.”
When asked about a possible 2027 presidential run, Makinde was cautious but clear:
“Nobody will set an agenda for me. I will set an agenda for myself… If my political journey ends here, I’m also happy.”
He said his focus remains on delivering good governance in Oyo State and that any national ambition would only be declared “at the appropriate time” — not as a stunt, but with full preparation and accountability.
