“Don’t Condemn, Dont Hate the Police Force” – Police spokesperson, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi

Olumuyiwa Adejobi

Nigeria is no exception to the global questioning of public trust in law enforcement. However, a recent appeal from the Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has sparked a national conversation about the need to separate the actions of a few from the integrity of an entire institution.

Via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Prince Adejobi urged Nigerians not to condemn the police force outright.

He acknowledged that while some officers may engage in misconduct, these individuals represent only a small fraction of the entire force.

“Don’t hate the Nigeria Police Force and its officers,” he wrote. “You can dislike the attitudes or misconduct of a very few ones who rubbish the profession.”

Adejobi’s message emphasized that many police officers nationwide are hardworking, respectful, and committed.

He believes that once citizens have genuine interactions with more officers, they’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the police’s role in society.

“When you meet many of the officers of the force, you will love them and appreciate the force better,” he added.

He didn’t deny that there are “a few recalcitrant individuals” in the system. But rather than giving in to widespread condemnation, he advocated for collective reform.

“These ones are very infinitesimal; and they can still be reformed to be good ambassadors of the force,” Adejobi noted.

He called on citizens, civil society organizations, and stakeholders to work with the police to drive positive change. According to him, condemning the entire police force is counterproductive and undermines the institution’s noble essence.

“We need to collectively work together to reform the police, not to condemn the noble profession.”

This statement comes at a time when the Nigerian Police Force has faced criticism over cases of brutality, corruption, and unprofessional conduct.

However, there have also been commendable officers and successful policing efforts that often go unnoticed.

Prince Adejobi’s statement reminds us that while accountability is necessary, so too is balance.

Reforming a system requires collaboration, constructive dialogue, and the willingness to recognize and support the good even as we challenge the bad.
