The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a dramatic turn over the weekend as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced his formal withdrawal from all previously agreed reconciliation efforts.
In a strongly worded statement signed personally and released on Saturday, May 25, the former Rivers State governor accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of being the “chief culprit” behind the PDP’s deteriorating unity, citing consistent breaches of trust and serial dishonesty.
Wike also named Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah among those allegedly undermining party cohesion, accusing them of orchestrating parallel meetings and interfering in key party affairs, including the Anambra governorship race and zonal congresses.
According to Wike, the breakdown stems from post-2023 election reconciliation attempts, including multiple meetings with G5 governors and key stakeholders, such as one hosted by former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
Wike claimed the terms were repeatedly violated despite reaching a gentleman’s agreement during those sessions, including a consensus on Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s recognition as the PDP National Secretary.
“I have done everything possible to preserve party unity, but it is now clear that some individuals, whom I supported into office, have chosen the path of betrayal,” Wike said. “Given the continued breaches of our agreements, I am withdrawing from all reconciliatory understandings.”
Wike, a PDP stalwart since 1998, expressed regret over the party’s state and signaled readiness for a long-term political battle to “ensure justice is served.”
The development marks a major setback for efforts to resolve the party’s internal crisis and raises fresh concerns over the PDP’s cohesion ahead of upcoming elections.
