“Still Fighting, Still Smiling” – Taiwo Awoniyi Breaks Silence After Emergency Surgery and Medically Induced Coma

Taiwo Awoniyi becomes the 1st ever Nigerian player to score in 6 consecutive Premier League matches

Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has shared an emotional update following a life-threatening medical emergency that led to surgery and a medically induced coma earlier this month.

In a heartfelt Instagram post on Sunday, the 27-year-old forward thanked his club, teammates, fans, and supporters worldwide for their unwavering support during what he called “one of the most difficult” seasons of his career.

“With the grace of God, I am grateful to still be here, to still be fighting, to still be smiling, and to be in good spirits,” Awoniyi wrote.

The incident occurred during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Leicester City on May 12, when Awoniyi collided with the goalpost while attempting to score from an Anthony Elanga cross. Though he initially continued playing, the true extent of the abdominal injury was only revealed the next day.

Forest’s medical team swiftly arranged emergency surgery, and the club later confirmed his condition publicly via a post on X (formerly Twitter). Reports later revealed that Awoniyi had been placed in a medically induced coma as part of his post-operative care.

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo confirmed the development during a press conference, stating:

“It was a very tough moment for everyone. We’ve all been shaken.”

Despite the scare, Awoniyi’s recovery appears to be progressing positively. In his Instagram message, he expressed deep appreciation for the club staff, coaching team, and fellow players who visited him in the hospital:

“Seeing you all on your visit to the hospital lifted my spirits more than words can say.”

He also encouraged his teammates ahead of the season’s final matches:

“Keep believing and keep pushing. I’m with you all the way, and I can’t wait to be back out there with the boys doing what I love.”

Awoniyi extended his gratitude to fans worldwide and particularly those in Nigeria:

“To my family, friends, and football fans, thank you for the support. And to everyone back home in Nigeria who has checked in on me, prayed for me, and left kind words—thank you. I see them. I feel them. And I carry them with me every day as I recover.”

He ended his message on an uplifting note:

“Come on, you Reds. Still fighting, still smiling. #Godisthegreatest.”

Awoniyi’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience and the unifying spirit of football as he continues his road to recovery.
