Taiwo Awoniyi Undergoes Emergency Surgery After Brutal Collision in Nottingham Forest vs Leicester Clash

Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has undergone emergency abdominal surgery following a horrifying collision during his club’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Leicester City at the City Ground.

The 27-year-old Nigerian forward sustained the injury in the match’s final minutes while attempting to convert a low cross from teammate Anthony Elanga.

In a desperate stretch to connect with the ball, Awoniyi slammed into the base of the goalpost, immediately clutching his midsection in visible agony.

Medical staff rushed onto the pitch to attend to the visibly distressed striker, but the handling of the incident sparked a wave of controversy.

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was reportedly furious with the club’s medical team, engaging in a heated post-match exchange with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, questioning the readiness and decision-making of the medical personnel.

Awoniyi was transported directly from the stadium to a nearby hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery late Sunday evening.

While an official statement from the club is still pending, early reports suggest Awoniyi could face several weeks on the sidelines, dealing a massive blow to Forest’s attacking options and Nigeria’s national team setup.

This latest setback comes just as the forward was regaining his form after a lengthy absence earlier in the season due to a groin injury. So far this season, he has featured in 18 league matches, netting five goals and contributing two assists.

Awoniyi, who joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, has become a key player for both club and country, known for his physical presence and sharp goal-scoring instincts.

Fans, teammates, and well-wishers have taken to social media to send prayers and support, hoping for a speedy and complete recovery for the Nigerian star.
