Donald Trump, the President of the United States, recently shared an AI-generated image of himself wearing papal attire meant to imitate the late Pope Francis.
The picture was posted on Trump’s Truth Social account on Friday evening.
The former Pope, who passed away in April due to a stroke and heart failure, was mourned by many world leaders, including Trump, at his funeral.
However, some social media users criticized Trump for what they perceived as mocking Francis’ death with the doctored image.
“This is disgusting and entirely offensive,” one person wrote.
Another commented, “This is disrespectful to the church and God himself… he’s literally the antichrist.”
A third person tweeted, “How disrespectful to Catholics. That is what he and his maggots are all about, disrespect and meanness and stupidity. How dare you mock the process we Catholics go through to pick a new pope.”
Another person tweeted: “This is extremely disrespectful and narcissistic. republicans really voted for that.”
In the midst of this controversy, the Vatican announced that the conclave to select the new Pope would commence on Wednesday, May 7th.
