Anna Wintour Steps Down as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue After 37 Iconic Years

After nearly four decades at the helm of Vogue, Anna Wintour is officially stepping down as the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, marking the end of one of the most influential eras in fashion publishing history.

According to reports confirmed by WWD, Business of Fashion, and other credible outlets, the 75-year-old fashion icon announced her decision in a company-wide meeting on June 25.

While her departure leaves behind a towering legacy, Wintour will not be leaving the industry entirely. She will transition into a more expansive role as Global Chief Content Officer at Condé Nast and Global Editorial Director at Vogue, where she will now oversee all of the company’s global brands—including Vanity Fair, GQ, and others.

Wintour began her storied tenure at Vogue in 1988, succeeding Grace Mirabella. Over the years, she transformed the publication into the definitive fashion authority it is today, championing a blend of high fashion, pop culture, and boundary-pushing editorial.

Her influence extended far beyond the printed page. Widely considered the most powerful woman in fashion, Wintour was also the inspiration for the character Miranda Priestly in Lauren Weisberger’s novel The Devil Wears Prada—later adapted into the critically acclaimed film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

Wintour’s next chapter promises to be just as impactful as her legendary past, with her continued leadership at Condé Nast expected to shape the future of global media and fashion storytelling.
