Popular Nigerian comedian Basketmouth has weighed in on the controversy surrounding alleged financial irregularities involving trillions of naira in the audited financial statements of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
The issue was brought to light by the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, chaired by Senator Aliyu Wadada, during an investigative session on Wednesday, June 18.
The committee described the revelations as “mind-boggling and worrisome,” citing discrepancies of over N210 trillion in receivables between 2017 and 2023, along with questionable legal and auditing fees that lacked proper documentation.
“Legal fees were accrued without any explanation or documentation regarding the legal services rendered. The auditors’ fees raise similar questions. Everything we’ve seen and heard from the audited financial statements is troubling,” the committee noted.
The Senate panel stressed that the concerns are based on a careful review of NNPCL’s official audited financial reports, not on speculation. The committee also pointed out that documents newly presented by NNPCL contradicted previous filings, raising further questions about transparency and accountability.
Reacting to the disturbing reports, Basketmouth posted on social media:
“Good thing I am not God. Thunder go don finish by now.”
His comment has since gone viral, reflecting public frustration over recurring financial scandals involving government agencies.
The Senate is expected to continue its investigation as calls for a full audit and accountability grow louder from civil society groups and concerned Nigerians.
