Nigerian singer Anthony Ebuka Victor, widely known as Victony, has shared how a tragic car accident in 2021 altered his parents’ stance on his pursuit of music.
Speaking during an interview on the Behind The Prestige podcast, the Soweto crooner disclosed that his parents were not initially supportive of his music career. Instead, they hoped he would finish his studies and follow a more conventional path by becoming an engineer.
“My parents were not cool with me doing music from the jump. They didn’t tell me to stop, but they weren’t 100% supportive of it,” Victony explained.
That outlook, however, changed drastically after the singer survived a horrific car accident in April 2021, which claimed one life and left three others injured.
The outpouring of public support following the incident made a strong impression on Victony’s parents. “When I had my accident in 2021 and they saw how much impact I had on people, how people on social media were posting things like ‘pray for Victony’, they realised my music career meant a lot to me and just let me do what I wanted,” he said.
Victony, who rose to fame after his 2021 collaboration with Mayorkun on the hit track Holy Father, is currently signed to Mainland Block Party, a label led by music executive Tobi Mohammed.
Despite the trauma of the accident, the artist previously described the experience as a “blessing in disguise.” He also revealed that he has undergone four surgeries since then, highlighting the physical and emotional journey he has endured on his road to recovery and success.
