David Beckham has officially received a knighthood, marking a pinnacle in his illustrious career as one of England’s most iconic footballers.

The former Manchester United and England captain was named in the King’s Birthday Honours list and awarded the prestigious title for his contributions to football and his charitable endeavours.

Beckham, who was previously honoured with an OBE in 2003, now joins the ranks of esteemed British athletes recognised for their influence both on and off the field.

His professional career took him across global football stages — from Manchester United to Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain — establishing him early on as a pioneer among English players abroad. With 115 appearances for England, David Beckham once held the record for most caps by an outfield player. In 2018, he launched Major League Soccer club Inter Miami CF.

Reacting to the honour, David Beckham reflected on his roots:
“Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour.
I have been fortunate to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation.”

Despite being nominated as early as 2011, Beckham’s path to knighthood was delayed due to setbacks, including a 2017 email leak scandal that his representatives described as “doctored” and misleading.

With this long-awaited recognition finally granted, Beckham now turns his attention to Inter Miami, who will take on Egyptian club Al Ahly in the Club World Cup on Saturday.
