Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s remarks regarding the internal crisis plaguing opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During his Democracy Day speech at the National Assembly, President Tinubu mocked the state of the opposition, saying it was a “delight” to watch them in disarray.
He also dismissed claims of attempting to create a one-party state amid increasing defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reacting shortly after the event, Saraki admitted that the PDP was indeed struggling but emphasized that the responsibility for rebuilding the party rests solely on its members.
“I think we must take him at his word,” Saraki said. “He spoke well, stating that he’s not in support of a one-party system. That means we’re on the same page—Nigeria needs a strong multi-party democracy.”
Saraki urged PDP members and other opposition groups to stop making excuses and focus on reviving their political structures.
“For those who say they’re under pressure, there’s no pressure anymore. As the President has said, he won’t help us fix our party, so we have to do the work ourselves,” he concluded.
