Inter Milan have opened formal talks with Como head coach Cesc Fabregas as they seek a swift replacement for Simone Inzaghi, who officially left the club by mutual consent on Tuesday.
The announcement comes exactly four years after Inzaghi’s appointment — and just three days after Inter’s devastating 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.
Inzaghi is set to join Al-Hilal on a €26 million-per-year deal, with his debut scheduled for June 18 against Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup.
With Inter also set to compete in the Club World Cup later this month, the club is racing against time to appoint a new manager — interim or permanent — before the tournament begins.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Fabregas is Inter’s top choice. The former Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona midfielder has made a strong impression in his first coaching role, guiding Como to promotion to Serie A in his debut season.
Fabregas has already turned down approaches from Bayer Leverkusen (before they appointed a successor to Xabi Alonso) and AS Roma (who opted for Gian Piero Gasperini), showing he’s being selective about his next move.
While the 37-year-old Spaniard is reportedly interested in Inter’s proposal, he has not yet given a definitive answer. Negotiations are ongoing, with both parties expected to stay in close contact.
Other names in the frame include Roberto De Zerbi, Patrick Vieira, and Cristian Chivu, but Fabregas remains the clear frontrunner as Inter look to stabilize quickly after a turbulent few days.
