Manchester United are preparing to open formal talks with Brentford over a potential £60 million move for star forward Bryan Mbeumo, according to The Times. But it’s not just the transfer fee making headlines — Mbeumo is reportedly demanding a staggering £250,000-per-week salary.
Currently earning £ 50,000 per week at Brentford, the 25-year-old Cameroon international is seeking a fivefold increase in wages should he secure a move to Old Trafford.
And with good reason — Mbeumo stepped up in a big way during the 2024/25 season, becoming Brentford’s main attacking threat following Ivan Toney’s departure. He finished the campaign with 20 goals and 7 assists across 38 Premier League matches, a form that has caught the attention of several top-tier clubs.
United, who just finalized a deal for Wolves striker Matheus Cunha, are targeting Mbeumo as a key piece in Ruben Amorim’s rebuild. After a dismal campaign that saw the club slump to a shocking 15th-place finish, changes are expected — and fast.
But meeting Mbeumo’s wage demands could be tricky. United’s current wage bill remains inflated, with Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford among the top earners. However, both players are likely to be offloaded this summer, which could create room to accommodate Mbeumo’s salary.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United are also keeping tabs on the situation. Still, Mbeumo is said to prefer a move to Old Trafford, where he would play a starring role in Amorim’s attacking system.
Though no official bid has been lodged yet, United are expected to open direct negotiations with Brentford in the coming days.
