The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed that the man who broke security protocol during President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to the state suffers from a mental health condition.
The individual, identified as Umar Mohammed from Anguwan Muazu in Kaduna, disrupted proceedings on Thursday during the commissioning of key projects at Murtala Mohammed Square, where President Tinubu was addressing the public.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, Umar had earlier gained access to the venue as a supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was dressed in party attire and carried banners featuring both President Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that Umar Mohammed breached protocol by entering the restricted area due to curiosity and excitement,” Hassan stated. “He acted out of anxiety and a longstanding desire to meet the President and the Governor. Medical records confirm that he has a psychiatric disorder and is not mentally sound.”
The police also clarified that viral videos circulating online had been doctored to mislead the public. They urged citizens to refrain from politicizing the incident or spreading misinformation.
Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, assured the public that the matter remains under review and warned against the dissemination of false reports.
The security breach occurred during President Tinubu’s commissioning of several landmark projects initiated by Governor Sani, including a 300-bed specialist hospital and 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for public transport.
Despite the momentary disruption, President Tinubu remained calm and was seen instructing security personnel to “leave him alone” before proceeding with his speech. Governor Sani also signaled for calm, helping to de-escalate the situation smoothly.
