“I Chose My Children Over 10 houses” — Oga Bello Reflects on Fatherhood and Legacy

Adebayo Salami

Veteran Nollywood actor Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, has opened up about a pivotal life decision that set him apart from many of his peers: prioritizing his children’s future over accumulating wealth and property.

In a candid interview, the 73-year-old thespian revealed that his wealth lies not in real estate or bank accounts, but in the success and values of his 18 children, including award-winning actor Femi Adebayo.

“I invested in my children instead of building houses. That is the reason I’m not as wealthy as some of my mates,” he said. “I’m content with my life because I know I have done what’s most important.”

Education Over Fame

Despite his long-standing fame in the Yoruba movie industry, Oga Bello revealed he made a conscious decision not to let his stardom influence how he raised his children. He insisted that none of them could venture into acting without first completing their education.

“Even Femi, I insisted he finished school first. I told them, ‘If you fail in education, don’t come to me about acting.’”

This discipline, he believes, is the foundation of the success his children now enjoy.

“My Children Are My Pride”

While many of his contemporaries were building multiple houses and chasing material success, Oga Bello said he chose to pour his energy and resources into instilling discipline, values, and education in his children.

“When people commend my children for being well-behaved or successful, it gives me more joy than owning 10 houses.”

“My son Femi is doing very well, and so are the others. That is my pride.”

Changes in the Industry

Reflecting on how the entertainment industry has evolved since he began in 1964 with the Young Concert Party — which later became the Awada Kerikeri Organisation — the actor acknowledged both progress and decline.

“When we started, acting was purely about passion. We weren’t paid much, but we loved what we were doing. Now, it’s a different game. There’s money, but also less discipline.”

A Fulfilled Life at 73

Despite not being a billionaire or property mogul, Oga Bello says he has no regrets. His definition of wealth lies in peace of mind and the positive legacy he has built through his children.

“I may not be a billionaire, but I have peace of mind. I see my children succeeding, and that’s the greatest blessing.”

“Some of my mates have buildings in every corner, but many can’t say the same about their children.”
