The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to take immediate and decisive action to address Nigeria’s worsening economic and security situation or risk being voted out in 2027.
In a strongly worded statement released Thursday by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the factional Deputy President-General of Ohanaeze, the group said the rising hunger, hardship, and insecurity across the nation could derail Tinubu’s reelection bid and make it impossible for state governors to deliver electoral support.
“The current alignment with these governors, who perpetuate the country’s economic and security tribulations, must be reconsidered,” the statement read.
Ohanaeze accused several state governors, especially those from the North, of pretending to support the president while secretly plotting against him. It warned that Northern governors may abandon Tinubu in 2027 and Southern governors may also be divided, leaving the president politically isolated.
The group called out the failure of palliatives from the fuel subsidy removal to trickle down to citizens, as well as the undermining of local government autonomy, despite a Supreme Court ruling in its favor.
Ohanaeze warned that new tax reforms may also face sabotage unless there is a radical shift in governance and leadership.
“Nigerians are grappling with soaring costs of living. Prices of essential goods and services have become unbearable,” the group stated.
As a solution, the organization advised Tinubu to:
-
Lower electricity tariffs
-
Restructure his economic management team
-
Cut government waste
-
Invest heavily in agriculture and infrastructure
It encouraged Tinubu to emulate “young visionary leaders like Burkina Faso’s Captain Toure,” who empower youths and focus on food security.
“Let it be said without fear or favor that the current trajectory is unsustainable. The failure to act decisively will render any 2027 political aspirations moot,” Ohanaeze warned.
