Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of exacerbating economic hardship across Nigeria.
In an interview with BBC, Amaechi said the current government is failing the people and vowed to continue speaking truth to power despite being a longstanding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“If the government is failing the country, you don’t just go along because you’re in the same party. You know that’s not right,” he stated.
Amaechi lamented the rising level of hunger and hardship, saying that he personally feels the economic pressure.
“People are dying. People are starving. I myself am feeling the effects of hunger,” he added.
The former minister hinted at joining forces with a political coalition determined to challenge Tinubu’s reelection bid in 2027. Political observers widely believe Amaechi is aligning with prominent opposition figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, both of whom attended his recent 60th birthday celebration in Abuja.
At the event, Amaechi, Atiku, and El-Rufai reportedly accused President Tinubu of “weaponizing poverty” in the country—a claim that has stirred further political debate nationwide.
While Amaechi reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC, he emphasized that party allegiance does not equate to unconditional support for a failing government.
This bold move positions Amaechi as a potential key player in the opposition’s plan to unseat Tinubu in the next general elections.
