Controversial Nigerian musician Speed Darlington is once again at the center of online discourse, this time aiming for Africa’s heavy reliance on prayer, particularly the common invocation of the “God of Israel” in religious expressions.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, Speedy questioned the logic behind calling on the God of Israel when, according to him, Israel itself turns to the United States in times of crisis.
“Africa always pray, ‘God of Israel, God of Israel,’” he said. “But right now, Israel is calling USA. Why didn’t the God of Israel help his own country?”
Taking a jab at the emotional and expressive prayer style often seen in African churches, he continued:
“But Africa go dey shout, ‘raka shaka, puskete, mima,’ while Israel dey look for help. They play, blackie, they play.”
Speed Darlington also doubled down in his caption:
“Everything cannot be achieved from prayers. Our destiny is in our hands.”
The post has since gone viral, sparking a mixed reaction online. While some praised his boldness in challenging what they see as a culture of over-spiritualization, others accused him of mocking people’s faith and failing to understand the deeper context of religious belief in Africa.
This is not the first time Speedy has courted controversy with his outspoken views on religion, politics, and society, further cementing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most provocative entertainers.
