Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has reaffirmed his dedication to the Nigerian national team, saying he has no immediate plans to retire from international football.
In a recent interview with Punch, the 31-year-old defender, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, stated that he still feels physically and mentally prepared to compete at the highest level.
Asked whether he had ever considered stepping away from the national team, Troost-Ekong responded confidently:
“No, not yet. I’m 31 now, and I still feel strong physically and mentally. When the time comes for me to step aside, I’ll know. I’ll be the first one to say, ‘I’m done.’ I’ll never overstay my welcome. But right now, that’s not crucial to my mind. I still feel like I have something to offer the team.”
Troost-Ekong’s declaration comes amid increased speculation about the future of some of the team’s senior players following Nigeria’s recent international campaigns.
The PAOK Thessaloniki defender has been a key figure in the Super Eagles setup since making his debut in 2015 and has earned widespread praise for his leadership and consistent performances. His reassurance of continued availability will likely be welcomed by both fans and national team coaches as Nigeria prepares for upcoming AFCON qualifiers and the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
