UN Condemns US Military Strikes on Iran, Warns of Dangerous Escalation

The United Nations has strongly condemned the recent United States military strikes on Iran, warning that the move could dangerously escalate tensions and threaten global peace and security.

The condemnation comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces carried out airstrikes on three nuclear sites in Iran.

The strikes mark a stark reversal after Trump’s earlier public distancing from Israel’s ongoing conflict with Iran. In a statement on Sunday, Trump warned Iran that it “will get hit again” if it fails to seek peace.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed “grave alarm” over the military action, describing it as destabilising for an already volatile Middle East region.

“This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security,” Guterres wrote in a statement shared on X.

He further cautioned that the situation risks spiralling out of control, potentially triggering catastrophic consequences for civilians and countries across the region.

The US airstrikes come amid a cycle of retaliatory attacks between Iran and Israel. On June 13, Israel launched a large-scale offensive targeting Iran’s military infrastructure, including nuclear facilities and high-ranking officers. In retaliation, Iran fired missiles into Israeli territory, resulting in at least three deaths and over 20 injuries in the Coastal Plains region.

As threats and counter-threats intensify, the international community has voiced concern over the potential for the conflict to erupt into a full-scale regional war. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed that Israel’s actions “will not go unanswered,” further fueling global apprehension.

Guterres has called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and engage in diplomatic dialogue to prevent further bloodshed.
