Renowned Nigerian author and feminist icon Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has issued a heartfelt piece of advice to young women regarding the importance of choosing the right life partner.
Speaking during a recent public event, the award-winning Half of a Yellow Sun author emphasized that a woman’s life can be significantly influenced by the man she chooses to marry.
According to her, a woman’s desperation to get married often leads her into relationships with partners who may not be supportive or kind.
“It’s really important who you choose. Young women, choose wisely,” she said.
“Sometimes you can tell that the person you are with is not really a good person, but you are desperate to get married.”
Chimamanda, who is married to Dr. Ivara Esege, a Nigerian-American medical doctor, reflected on her own marriage, adding that her life has been positively shaped by the decision to marry a kind and supportive partner.
“The person you choose as your life partner will make a huge difference in your life,” she continued.
“Choose somebody who is kind, who is supportive—it will make all the difference. I can tell you that I chose well.”

Chimamanda has long been vocal about issues affecting women, especially in areas of marriage, career, and cultural expectations. Her TED Talk “We Should All Be Feminists” and writings like Dear Ijeawele have been widely praised for challenging societal norms and empowering women to make informed choices.
Her latest comments reinforce her stance that women should not settle in relationships out of societal pressure, but rather prioritize emotional well-being, support, and respect in their partnerships.
