2027: “He’s the Most Formidable Candidate” – Dele Momodu Backs Atiku

Dele Momodu Declares Loss of Faith in PDP

Veteran journalist and political commentator, Dele Momodu, has openly declared his support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to emerge as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Dele Momodu explained his preference for Atiku, noting that the former vice president has the numbers and represents a formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu.

“I said the best choice would be my candidate. Which is what I expect the ‘Obidents’ to say, which I expect those who are supporting Rotimi Amaechi to say, there is nothing wrong with that,” Momodu stated.

He emphasized the significance of numbers in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly noting that the most aggrieved voters are from the northern region.

Dele Momodu further pointed out that even politicians like Nyesom Wike, who advocate for a southern presidency, acknowledge the practical dominance of northern political influence.

“And if you listened to Wike very well, they are all campaigning that the next President should still come from southern Nigeria. But they know very well that there is no Southerner today. The only one who could have attempted it is Wike. And since he’s already supporting Tinubu…”

Dele Momodu argued that the persistent attacks on Atiku are a clear indication of how much of a threat he poses to the current administration.

“The moment you see people waging a campaign of calumny against Atiku, you must know he poses a great threat.”

He praised Atiku’s independent political journey, citing his entrepreneurial background and investments in education and agriculture as proof of solid leadership qualities.

“He’s been running his business, investing in education, investing in agriculture. For me, this is a good example of what a leader should be. In Nigeria, you will never find a thug in front of Atiku’s house.”

Dele Momodu, who also maintains a cordial relationship with Peter Obi, clarified that his support for Atiku doesn’t undermine Obi’s value in national politics.

“Obi is my very good friend today. If you ask me, one of the people that I believe should lead the coalition, it will be Obi.”

He called on all political camps, including Obi’s ‘Obidients’ and Amaechi’s supporters, to campaign freely and democratically, advocating for a level playing field as opposition forces prepare to form a united front.

“As a Democrat, I’m appealing to them… Let them all go to the fields. Let all Obidients campaign for Obi. Let all those for Atiku and Amaechi also campaign.”

With the 2027 race already stirring conversations, Dele Momodu’s remarks add fuel to the growing momentum around coalition talks and opposition realignment in Nigeria’s political space.
