Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced the addition of 50.4 megawatts (MW) to the national electricity grid following the commissioning of a mobile substation in Oyo State.
The project, located in Eleyele, Ido Local Government Area, was delivered through a partnership between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and Siemens Energy, a German company, under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).
Speaking during the commissioning on Thursday, Adelabu said the 63MVA, 132/33kV mobile substation will serve residents and businesses in Apete, Ologuneru, Sango, Ibadan, and surrounding communities in the state.
“With today’s commissioning at Eleyele, an additional 50.4MW is added, bringing the total to six mobile substations contributing an additional 302.4MW to the transmission network,” he stated.
The minister also revealed that another 50.4 MW mobile substation is nearing completion at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), further enhancing the national grid’s capacity.
Adelabu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving power infrastructure nationwide, noting that the six substations under the current initiative are expected to inject a total of 302.4MW into the national transmission network.
In June, Mustapha Abdullahi, Director General of the Energy Commission, disclosed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration had already added 2,000MW to the grid.
Despite ongoing efforts, Nigeria’s electricity generation remains fluctuating between 4,500MW and 5,148MW, serving an estimated population of over 250 million people.
