Musician Grimes has taken a sharp jab at her ex-partner, Elon Musk, criticizing his influence on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which the billionaire acquired in 2022.
The Canadian singer-songwriter, born Claire Elise Boucher, revealed that she had been staying away from social media—specifically X—due to what she described as its increasingly toxic environment under Musk’s leadership.
“OK, I’ve basically been entirely off social media and returning here it is overwhelmingly, abundantly and profoundly clear that this place – and all of these places – are a poison, a prison of utterly short form deep deep-sounding nonsense attached to no one that ur brain will discard imaging its learning,” she wrote in a scathing post.
Grimes, who shares three children with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO—four-year-old X Æ A-12, three-year-old Exa Dark Sideræl, and Techno Mechanicus, also three—didn’t hold back in her reflection on the state of online discourse.
She added, “The entire thing is a theatre” and a “sh**ty pale simulacra of a life.”
The pair reportedly ended their romantic relationship nearly four years ago. In a 2021 interview with Page Six, Musk stated that he and Grimes were “semi-separated.” Since then, the artist has turned her focus more toward her creative projects.
Despite her frustration with social media, Grimes ended on a passionate note about her artistic inspiration.
“I literally could not be more hyped on (British DJ) Sub Focus,” she shared. “Dance music has felt bizarrely sterile and increasingly so over time.”
Grimes’ comments have sparked conversation around the evolving nature of digital platforms and the mental toll of constant online engagement—especially as shaped by high-profile tech figures like Musk.
