Popular Nigerian comedian and skit maker Sabinus, also known as Mr. Funny, has issued a heartfelt apology to Wizkid and his devoted fan base, Wizkid FC, following backlash over a recent comment that many deemed disrespectful to the Grammy-winning artist.
In a video that has since gone viral, Sabinus addressed the controversy during a live stream, clarifying that his remarks were misunderstood and not intended as an insult to the Afrobeats star.
“I wasn’t trying to insult Wizkid,” Sabinus said during the stream. “What I said was taken out of context. I would never speak badly about a legend like him.”
Clearing the Air
Sabinus explained that his words were misconstrued and emphasized his deep respect for Wizkid. He referenced his personal experience with Burna Boy, another Nigerian music icon, who once gave him a platform abroad that helped elevate his career. Given that background, he questioned why he would ever choose to insult another respected artist in the same industry.
“I’ve benefitted from the kindness of industry legends,” he added. “Why would I ever disrespect another one?”
A Gesture of Remorse
To demonstrate the sincerity of his apology, Sabinus noted that he had already shared written apologies across his social media platforms. During the live session, some members of Wizkid FC demanded that he kneel as a sign of remorse — and he did.
“I’m truly sorry for the misunderstanding. I love and respect Wizkid,” he said as he knelt.
Social Media Pressure and the Carter Efe Precedent
Sabinus’s apology follows a similar incident involving comedian Carter Efe, who recently lost access to both his Instagram and TikTok accounts after insulting Wizkid during a live broadcast. In that case, Wizkid FC quickly mobilized, reporting the accounts en masse, which led to their suspension.
Aware of the power and passion of Wizkid’s fanbase, Sabinus moved swiftly to correct the narrative before it escalated further.
