The internal tensions within the Labour Party have escalated as the Julius Abure-led faction issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi, demanding that he resign from the party following his decision to join the newly formed political coalition.
In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday by Obiora Ifoh, the National Publicity Secretary of the faction, the party distanced itself from the coalition, condemning it as an alliance of “power mongers” and “recycled, frustrated politicians”.
“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him,” the statement read.
The Abure-led group insisted that Labour Party remains united in its mission and will not allow individuals to maintain dual political allegiances, warning that members involved in the coalition must resign within 48 hours or face consequences.
“Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda, people with deceptive persona… People that in the morning, they will claim to be in the Labour Party and in the evening they are in coalition.”
Ifoh further declared that the coalition does not represent the values or hopes of Nigeria’s youthful population, which makes up nearly 70 percent of the country’s demographic.
“The new Nigeria that the youths are dreaming of is not what can be realized from what we are seeing in the coalition. These people are opportunistic politicians who are only interested in relaunching themselves into the circle of power.”
He reaffirmed the Labour Party’s vision as the true path to realising a new Nigeria, urging loyal members to maintain the party’s integrity and structure ahead of future elections.
This development marks a sharp public rift within the opposition space, just as Peter Obi’s coalition moves have begun gaining national attention ahead of the 2027 general elections.
