Liverpool Eye Newcastle's Alexander Isak Amid Growing Doubts Over Darwin Núñez Future

Liverpool have expressed interest in signing Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, as the Reds intensify their hunt for a new No. 9 amid uncertainty surrounding Darwin Núñez’s future, a source has told ESPN.

The Premier League champions are exploring high-profile forward options, with Napoli reportedly among the clubs keen to land Núñez this summer.

While no official bid has been made yet, Liverpool has approached Newcastle to assess Isak’s availability — a tactic they’ve used for other attacking targets as well.

However, Newcastle United remain adamant that the 24-year-old Sweden international is not for sale.

“Liverpool have not submitted a formal offer for Isak, however they have made an approach to Newcastle to assess his availability,” the source confirmed to ESPN.

Isak’s Impressive Record at Newcastle

Since joining the Magpies, Alexander Isak has emerged as one of the most consistent strikers in the Premier League, netting 62 goals in 102 appearances across all competitions. His stock rose further after scoring a memorable goal against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final in March.

Newcastle’s firm stance on keeping Isak is also reflected in their transfer strategy, as the club is working on a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike — not as a replacement, but to partner Isak in a two-striker setup.

“Newcastle are working on a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, with a view to the forward playing alongside Isak in attack,” the source added.

Liverpool Transfer Update: Díaz Bid Rejected, Wirtz Signed

Meanwhile, Liverpool have turned down a €67.5 million (£58.6m) bid from Bayern Munich for Luis Díaz, signaling their unwillingness to offload key attackers unless top-tier replacements are secured.

The Merseyside giants have already made a major splash this summer by signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116 million, setting a new British transfer record.

Reports suggest that Newcastle would demand more than the Wirtz deal even to consider letting go of Isak, making any potential move a financially challenging one for Liverpool.

Though the Reds have been loosely linked with Hugo Ekitike, sources close to the club say the 23-year-old’s profile does not fully convince them at this stage.

Conclusion

As Liverpool weigh their options in the transfer market, Alexander Isak has emerged as a top target. But with Newcastle unwilling to sell and Isak’s value soaring, any potential transfer would require serious negotiation — and possibly a new club record fee. For now, Liverpool are keeping close tabs while Darwin Núñez’s future remains unresolved.
