Veteran Nigerian rapper Jude Abaga, widely known as M.I Abaga, has made it clear that he feels no pressure from the new generation of Nigerian hip-hop artists making waves in the music industry.
In a recent interview with Jay On Air, the celebrated rapper praised the creativity and success of emerging stars such as Odumodublvck, Blaqbonez, Shallipopi, Ladipoe, and Falz, but emphasized that their rise does not threaten his confidence or relevance.
“The likes of Odumodublvck, Shallipopi, Ladipoe, and Falz are the rappers who are currently making waves,” M.I said.
“But I have not felt like I’m the old guy in terms of skills. For me as an artist, that part doesn’t affect me. What I care about is—if you and I were in the studio, am I with somebody who can outrap me?”
Known for his lyrical prowess and self-acclaimed title as “African Rapper No. 1”, M.I went on to acknowledge the artistic brilliance of younger acts, particularly singling out Odumodublvck and Blaqbonez for their uniqueness.
“I love what Odumodu is doing. I love what Blaqbonez is doing. I love their talent, but it doesn’t intimidate me.”
The interview has since sparked conversations on social media, with fans lauding M.I for his humility, self-assuredness, and continued relevance in Nigeria’s ever-evolving rap scene.
