Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Set to Resume Duties After Court Nullifies Suspension

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Set to Resume Duties

Suspended Kogi lawmaker Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has formally notified the Nigerian Senate of her intention to resume legislative duties on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, following a Federal High Court ruling that declared her suspension unconstitutional.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Binta Nyako in Abuja, the court ruled that the six-month suspension of the senator was a violation of the constitutional rights of her constituents, stating that the Senate’s action exceeded its legal authority.

Reacting to the decision, Akpoti-Uduaghan, through her legal firm M.J Numa & Partners LLP, sent a letter dated July 11 to the Senate leadership, urging the legislative body to comply with the ruling and restore her to office without delay.

The legal team referenced Section 63 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees lawmakers the right to represent their people unless lawfully removed. They emphasized that any delay in reinstating her would be a further breach of constitutional provisions.

The letter also included a certified copy of the court’s decision and demanded that all necessary steps be taken to ensure her full return to legislative functions.

This court decision is seen as a major legal victory for the Kogi senator and a critical test for the Senate’s adherence to judicial rulings.

All eyes are now on the Senate to observe whether it will comply with the court order ahead of the July 15 resumption date.
