Nigeria’s Super Falcons are just one step away from making history as they secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over South Africa in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday in Casablanca.
The win sets up a mouth-watering final clash against host nation Morocco on Saturday, July 26, as Nigeria chases a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Ajibade and Alozie Seal the Deal
The Super Falcons took the lead in the first half through a penalty converted by captain Rasheedat Ajibade, before Michelle Alozie added a crucial second goal in stoppage time to secure the win at the Stade Larbi Zaouli.
Defending champions South Africa had pulled one back, but their efforts weren’t enough to deny Nigeria’s determined run to the final.
Nigeria’s Tactical Dominance
Under head coach Justine Madugu, Nigeria began the match with urgency, dominating possession in the early minutes. In the 11th minute, Ashleigh Plumptre set up Chinwendu Ihezuo, but South Africa’s goalkeeper Andile Dlamini produced a brilliant save to keep her side in the game.
Despite being tested by a resilient South African side, Nigeria’s experience and composure saw them through to another WAFCON final.
Final Showdown vs Morocco
Nigeria will now battle Morocco, who edged Ghana 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. The final promises to be an electrifying encounter, with both teams hungry for glory.
The Super Falcons have never lost a WAFCON final since the tournament’s inception in 1998 — a stunning record they’ll look to protect on Saturday.
