Professor Jerry Gana, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has revealed that the party has made contact with former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in a bid to persuade him to return to its fold.
Speaking on AIT’s Focus Nigeria on Friday, Gana confirmed that reconciliatory moves were underway and that Obi was among several key political figures the party is reaching out to.
When asked directly whether the PDP had approached Peter Obi, Gana replied, “Why not?” adding that more outreach efforts were ongoing, although he declined to disclose further names until discussions progress.
Gana noted that the PDP is now better positioned to bring back former members, saying,
“I have a very solid platform now. I can go back to them and say, ‘The issues you were complaining about have been fixed.’ I believe many will respond positively.”
Peter Obi left the PDP on May 25, 2022, shortly before the party’s presidential primaries, citing internal issues and a lack of alignment with the party’s direction. He went on to contest the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party banner.
The move to woo Obi back is part of the PDP’s broader strategy to rebuild its base and strengthen its chances ahead of the 2027 elections.
