Senator Adams Oshiomhole has urged Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to formally inform Governor Monday Okpebholo before making visits to Edo State, especially when such visits involve public institutions.
Speaking on Arise TV’s Prime Time on Friday, Oshiomhole weighed in on the controversy surrounding Governor Okpebholo’s earlier remarks warning Obi against entering the state without prior notice—a statement that has triggered criticism and claims of political harassment.
The governor had linked Obi’s previous visit to a security breach that allegedly led to the deaths of three individuals.
Defending the governor’s stance, Oshiomhole explained that it’s standard protocol for high-profile individuals to notify local authorities before visiting state-owned facilities, emphasizing the need for respect and coordination.
“The governor manages state assets on behalf of the people,” he said. “If I were visiting a public institution in another state, I would consider it courteous and appropriate to notify the government in advance.”
Oshiomhole disclosed that Obi’s intended visit was to a government-funded educational institution, making coordination with state officials necessary.
While acknowledging his personal respect for Obi, whom he’s known for years, Oshiomhole pointed out their political differences:
“We don’t agree on many issues politically, but this matter is not about party lines—it’s about respecting established governance protocols.”
He stressed that the expectation for prior notice applies to all political figures, regardless of their affiliations.
