Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Wednesday, joined a host of prominent opposition figures at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja for a high-level media briefing organized by a newly formed political coalition.
The coalition, which brings together members of the Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and other political interests, has formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its unified platform to take on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Among the major political figures in attendance were:
-
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar
-
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai
-
Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi
-
Senator Dino Melaye
-
Former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung
-
PDP chieftain and media mogul Dele Momodu
-
Senators Gabriel Suswam and Ireti Kingibe
-
Former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha
-
Former Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (rtd)
As part of the coalition’s newly constituted interim leadership, former Senate President David Mark, who recently resigned from the PDP, has been appointed interim national chairman of the ADC, while former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola will serve as interim national secretary.
This strategic alliance marks one of the most significant realignments in Nigerian politics since 2015, setting the stage for what could be a formidable challenge to the APC’s hold on power in the next general election cycle.
