Janice Turner, mother of singer Sean Kingston, is requesting a significantly reduced sentence in their federal wire fraud case.
According to Billboard, Turner’s legal team has appealed to the judge for a 30-month prison term—less than half of what sentencing guidelines typically recommend for the offense.
Turner and her son were convicted on all counts in March 2025, with their sentencing set for August 15.
Her attorneys argue that a longer sentence would be excessive, citing her poor health and limited criminal history.
“Ms. Turner will go to prison; she has earned the prison sentence,” her lawyers wrote. “However, a sentence greater than 30 months is a waste of taxpayer resources based upon the history and characteristics of Ms. Turner.”
They also submitted letters of support portraying Turner as a valued member of her community and a nurturing figure whose home was a safe haven for many.
Turner has additionally requested to serve her sentence at a facility near Miami to allow for regular family visitation.
