Tunbosun Awe, a longtime political aide to Senator Olajide Ipinsagba representing Ondo North Senatorial District, has resigned from his position, citing poor remuneration amid Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions.
Awe, who served as Ward Liaison Officer for Isowopo Ward II in Akoko North-East Local Government, made his resignation public in a letter released in Akure, the state capital. He described his ₦20,000 monthly salary as “a far cry from the national minimum wage of ₦70,000 and the country’s current economic reality.”
“This is sequel to the N20,000 monthly salary payment to me, which is against the present economic realities,” Awe wrote. “It is the same amount you offered me in 2007 when I served as your personal assistant.”
He also lamented that all attempts to secure a salary increase or meet with the senator were unsuccessful.
Awe detailed a long history of political loyalty and service, dating back to 2006 during Ipinsagba’s first senatorial bid under the Concept 2007 campaign. He recalled playing key roles, including serving as campaign secretary and later as PA during Senator Ipinsagba’s appointment in the administration of the late Governor Olusegun Agagu.
Despite the resignation, Awe expressed gratitude to the senator for the opportunities provided over the years.
However, the resignation has stirred internal political tension. Bankole Akerele, a staunch ally of Senator Ipinsagba, labeled Awe an “ingrate,” alleging that he had shifted his loyalty to rival political actors.
Attempts to reach the senator’s spokesperson, Yinka Ajagunna, for an official response were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
