Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a statement performance on Friday, crushing Zambia 5–0 in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca.
The emphatic victory, powered by goals from Osinachi Ohale, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Oluwatosin Demehin, and Folashade Ijamilusi, not only sealed Nigeria’s place in the semi-finals but also served as sweet revenge for their 1–0 loss to the Copper Queens in the third-place match of the 2022 edition.
The Super Falcons got off to a flying start, with Ohale heading in a well-placed cross just two minutes into the match.
Despite Zambia’s efforts to regroup, led by star forward and reigning African Women’s Footballer of the Year Barbara Banda, Nigeria doubled their lead in the 26th minute.
Okoronkwo controlled a lofted pass with finesse and unleashed a thunderous half-volley beyond goalkeeper Ngambo Musole.
Ihezuo added a third just before halftime, brushing off her marker and calmly finishing into the bottom corner to hand Nigeria a commanding 3–0 lead at the break.
The Falcons continued their dominance in the second half, dictating play and maintaining control of possession.
In the 68th minute, Demehin nodded in a fourth goal from close range. With the game firmly in hand, head coach Justin Madugu introduced fresh legs, including Asisat Oshoala and Christy Ucheibe, to maintain the tempo.
In stoppage time, Rasheedat Ajibade delivered a pinpoint cross to Ijamilusi, who smashed home from the near post to complete the five-star performance.
“This victory means a lot to us,” Coach Madugu said after the match. “It shows our readiness and determination to win the title.”
The triumph marked Nigeria’s fourth consecutive clean sheet at the tournament and secured their 13th semi-final appearance in WAFCON history. The nine-time champions will now set their sights on the next hurdle as they chase a record-extending tenth title.
