The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to Nigerians seeking to travel to the US primarily to give birth and obtain American citizenship for their children.
In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the mission emphasized that “birth tourism” is a violation of US immigration policy.
“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the statement read. “Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.”
This comes amid growing enforcement against visa misuse and increased scrutiny over non-immigrant visa applications.
The warning follows a recent change in the US visa reciprocity policy for Nigerians. Most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas are now issued as single-entry visas with a validity of just three months, reflecting tighter immigration control measures.
The US government reiterated that global security standards guide all visa decisions to uphold the integrity of its immigration system.
