Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has explained why he was absent at the burial ceremony of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which was held on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, was notably missing from the high-profile event attended by several dignitaries, drawing criticism from some quarters over his absence.
In an interview with Arise TV, Peter Obi clarified that logistical challenges prevented his attendance.
“It was difficult to come yesterday (Tuesday) because there was no flight,” Obi stated.
“Even if there was a flight, you couldn’t land in Katsina Airport. It was all closed, because there was a lot of dignitaries.”
Despite the initial setback, Obi made it to Daura on Wednesday to personally extend his condolences to the family of the late former President.
“Mourning continues until tomorrow. So, whoever comes today and tomorrow is still part of the mourning,” he added.
Peter Obi’s visit comes as the nation continues to reflect on the legacy and leadership of Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 14, in London, and was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura.
