Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has hit out at the officiating during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United, insisting the visitors’ opener should have been ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
United broke the deadlock shortly after the restart when Leny Yoro rose to meet Bryan Mbeumo’s corner, with the defender’s header deflecting off Rodrigo Muniz for an own goal. But Fulham players immediately protested, claiming Yoro had shoved Bassey before making contact with the ball.
Speaking after the game, the Nigerian international was adamant the goal should not have stood.
“It is enough for me to not be able to win the ball and it is an advantage to him. It should have been disallowed. When the referee looks back, I think they will be disappointed,” Bassey told reporters.
“I cannot say too much, otherwise I will get a fine. It is a foul. When you go up to a jump, any little touch can put you off. What do you want me to do? Jump on the floor?”
The incident came after Bassey himself conceded a first-half foul that led to a United penalty, only for Bruno Fernandes to sky his effort over the bar following a heated exchange with referee Chris Kavanagh.
Fulham eventually found their equaliser when substitute Emile Smith Rowe converted Alex Iwobi’s cross with his very first touch, salvaging a point for the Cottagers in front of a lively Craven Cottage crowd.
For Ruben Amorim’s United, the draw extends their winless run in the Premier League this season, leaving further questions hanging over their start to the campaign. They now turn attention to Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Grimsby Town.
