Real Madrid leaned on the brilliance of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr to claim a 3-0 victory over newly-promoted Real Oviedo on Sunday, though concerns remain over the team’s overall performance under Xabi Alonso.
Mbappe opened the scoring in the first half with a composed finish into the bottom corner after turning past his marker. The Frenchman later doubled Madrid’s lead late on, coolly converting from a Vinicius assist.
Vinicius then sealed the win in stoppage time, rifling home Madrid’s third as Oviedo pushed forward in search of a late goal.
The hosts had threatened to cause an upset early on when Thibaut Courtois’ mistake gifted them an opening, but defender Dean Huijsen intervened just in time. Oviedo also rattled the post in the second half, coming agonisingly close to levelling before Madrid’s attacking stars took control.
Federico Valverde was denied by a superb stop from goalkeeper Aaron Escandell, preventing Madrid from extending their advantage earlier.
While the scoreline flattered Los Blancos, the spotlight once again fell on Mbappe and Vinicius, whose decisive contributions papered over another uneven team display.
